Should I Wear a Motorcycle Helmet?

by Frank Medley

The majority of motorcycle riders always wear their helmets. But many choose not to wear a helmet during their rides. Is it safe to ride without a helmet? Should you always wear a motorcycle helmet?

What are the reasons that someone wouldn’t wear a helmet, a piece of gear designed for protection? Some cannot afford a helmet. Where it isn’t required, others argue they don’t want to, that they like the freedom.

There are also horror stories about times that helmets are said to have done more harm that good, and lead to injury or death. Some riders feel there are safer without wearing a motorcycle helmet.

These tales are exaggerated and perpetuate a false stereotype. Numerous studies have shown that wearing a motorcycle helmet can help to prevent injury and death if a rider is involved in a crash.

Many motorcyclists live by the idea that a rider has either been in an accident, or will eventually be in one. This is because motorcyclists can be difficult to see, and a motorcycle is more prone than other vehicles to certain types of accidents.

The risk of major and minor accidents is the reason to always wear a motorcycle helmet, even for a short ride. They will help to prevent major injury to your head and neck f you have an accident.

Another tip is to never buy a used helmet. If a helmet has been dropped, or worn during an accident, it is worthless, much like a bumper that has already been hit. And there is often no way to tell.

If you are still unconvinced that you should be wearing a motorcycle helmet, check your city and state regulations. You may be surprised to find that you and any passengers are required to wear them by law.
